Gites Hibiscus in the Charente department of South West France

La Maison Hibiscus and it's three new gites are situated on the edge of the small village of Villeret in the beautiful countryside of the Charente department of South West France.

Charente

The Charente is in the Poitou-Charente region of France and we are a six to seven hour drive on the Autoroute from the port and tunnel at Calais, slightly less from Boulogne and about four hours from St Malo. Fields of vines, sunflowers and maize surround the village and the region is renowned for it’s temperate microclimate and is second only to the Cote D’Azur for the highest number of sunshine hours in France.

South West France

Located between the Atlantic coast and the estuary of the mighty Gironde River in South-West France, the Poitou-Charente region is most famous for the production of Cognac named after the mediaeval city where it was first produced in the South of the Charente Department.

Villeret

The small village of Villeret sits in the tranquil and gently undulating Charentaise countryside.

Car hire

Rental cars are also available at all local airports but need to be booked in advance and unless you are a member of a loyalty discount scheme with one of the major rental companies we would advise booking through one of the specialist websites where you will get a much better deal. Some we can recommend are:

:: www.autoeurope.com
:: www.carhire3000.com
:: www.novacarhire.com
:: www.holidayautos.com

Ferry ports
:: St Malo - 4 hours drive
:: Le Havre and Dieppe - 5 hours drive
:: Boulogne - 6 hours
:: Calais port and tunnel - 6 to 7 hours drive

The drive from the main channel ports at Calais and Boulogne can be done at speed on the toll roads and is an easy days drive. To sample the wider delights of France though, why not try the traffic free scenic routes away from the toll roads and what you save on the tolls you can spend on an overnight stop where a decent hotel can be booked for around 50 euros for a double room.

Trains
The Eurostar from St Pancras and Ebbsfleet to Paris or Lille connects you into the French TGV system. There are TGV stations in Poitiers and Angouleme and car hire can be arranged in advance from either. Both stations also connect with the local train service into Ruffec. Departing every morning and returning each evening there is also a TGV service from Ruffec to Paris which takes about 2 hours if you fancy a day out or perhaps even an overnight stay.
Local transport
As in the vast majority of rural France, public transport is non-existent so a car is essential to get you here and back even if only to and from the airport. Once you are here, there are a couple of local taxis but they generally need to be booked in advance especially during peak season.
